A polar blast hit the East Coast, bringing with it gale force winds.
Parts of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia will feel a cold snap in the air this weekend as a polar air mass crosses the east coast, moving further north after freezing Tasmania on Friday.
Queensland will also be hit by the cold front, but won’t feel it as badly as low-lying parts of the east coast.
New South Wales has been issued a gale warning for the Byron, Macquarie, Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra coasts for Saturday.
The Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra coasts have also been issued with dangerous surf warnings, with gale warnings for the Byron, Coffs and Macquarie coasts continuing into Sunday.
The Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra, Batemans and Eden coasts have been issued high wind warnings for Sunday.
A cold front is likely to bring showers, possibly even hail to the southern alpine areas over the next two days.
Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 19 degrees by Sunday.
Victoria will also be hit by strong winds on the east coast of Gippsland on Saturday, with temperatures expected to remain a low 14C in Melbourne.
Strong winds will persist on Sunday for the east Gippsland coast as well as the central Gippsland coast.
Maximum temperatures of 16 degrees are expected on Sunday.
There are no other weather warnings for Victoria.
Meanwhile, South Australia is under a frost warning as temperatures are expected to drop below -1 on Saturday morning.
Forecast areas Upper Southeast and Lower Southeast expect the most cold on Saturday.
“Ground-level temperatures can be many degrees cooler than those recorded by standard weather stations, particularly in calm conditions with clear skies,” the Bureau of Meteorology warned.
There are no wind warnings for South Australia.
The cold front is also expected to reach lower parts of Queensland, with areas in the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast issued with high wind warnings for Saturday.
The Torres Strait, Peninsular Coast and Cairns Coast have also been issued with high wind warnings.
Although temperatures won’t be as low, a warm 25C is forecast for Saturday before cooling to 23C by Sunday.
Winds are expected to pick up on Sunday as the front continues to move through.
Sunshine and the Gold Coast were issued with gale warnings for Sunday.
Meanwhile, strong winds will hit the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria, Torres Strait, Peninsula Coast, Cooktown Coast, Cairns Coast, Townsville Coast, Mackay Coast, Capricorn Coast and K’gari Coast on Sunday.
Parts of Tasmania will experience gusty and strong winds over the weekend.
Gale warnings have been issued for the south and south west coasts for Saturday and Sunday.
Meanwhile, high wind warnings have been issued for the South West Lakes region, the Far North West Coast, Banks Strait and Franklin Sound, east of Flinders Island and the central west coast.
High wind warnings have been issued for Sunday for the Far North West Coast, Central North Coast, Banks Strait and Franklin Strait, east of Flinders Island, Lower East Coast and Central West Coast.
Western Australia and Northern Territory
Meanwhile, Perth will reach a warm 29 degrees today, with wind gusts of up to 70km/h possible in the hills and foothills this morning.
Fire warnings are high across the city
Darwin will reach a high of 34 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, moderate winds of up to 25km/h are forecast for the morning but will ease by the afternoon.
