The 22-year-old pilot who died in a plane crash in the South Australian desert has been remembered as a happy young man who took the first step towards his dreams.

Adam Snell died after the light aircraft he was piloting crashed about 800 kilometers from Adelaide about 9.30am yesterday.

“He will always be our boy,” said Snell’s mother Allison.

The 22-year-old graduated from aviation school in New Zealand last year.

His move to the wilderness is the first step towards his dream of becoming a professional pilot and flying around the world.

“He will never get old and that’s how we remember him,” Ms Snell said

Snell worked at Mulgatting station, southwest of Coober Pedy.

Today, his mother cherished the memories of his big smile.

“Everybody loved him, he was a really happy and relaxed person,” she said.

“He had a strong moral compass, he knew what was right.”

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the cause of the crash.

It said there could be risks in low-level flying for harvesting and other farm operations.

“The reality is that when you’re low and at low speed, if something goes wrong, then you have very little opportunity to fix it, and that seems to be the case here,” ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said.
