Horse racing stunner as Racing NSW officials pull plug on Randwick due to ‘persistent’ rain

Saturday horse racing at Randwick it was dramatically called off at the last minute and a mad battle ensued.
Racing NSW stewards made the call on Saturday morning after heavy and persistent rain lashed Sydney.
“The track is not suitable for racing,” said chief steward Steve Railton.

“We had half an inch overnight, the same amount this morning and it’s still raining.
“The rain has left the track in a condition where we cannot be satisfied that we can safely run races.
“I think bringing people here to compete is going to waste everybody’s time.”
It is unclear at this stage whether some races, including the $200,000 Listed Civic Stakes, will be rescheduled.
Officials and broadcasters quickly adjusted their plans after the late call.
Channel 7 has announced that it will now broadcast live and free-to-air racing from Newcastle, as well as Ipswich and Flemington.
