“I was screaming but he still wanted to steal the car so I hit him,” she told 9News.
“I’m scared, but not chicken,” she said.
Her sister-in-law Tamara Afane said her child had just fallen asleep when the ordeal happened.
She told 9News she’s thankful Zachary was able to protect her child.
“(It’s) very painful. It just keeps repeating itself in my head, imagine he took the car. What if he hurts her, what if he kills her?’
He fled in a stolen car, with the getaway driver seen dancing to rap music as he drove.
Three men, aged 22, 22 and 21, were later arrested in Broadmeadows.
They have all been charged with serious crimes including home invasion, assault and making threats to kill.
All were remanded in custody.
